Apple currently uses the technology in iPhones, iPads and iMac products.
THX has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple, accusing the iPhone maker of infringing speaker technology used in itsiPhones, iPads and iMac products.
The company claims to hold a 2008 patent for a speaker unit capable of boosting sound output and can be attached to computers or flat-screen televisions.
According to the lawsuit filed by THX, Apple products that integrate the speaker units infringe the THX patent, 'causing the company monetary damage and irreparable harm'.
The firm is also seeking a court order to halt the alleged infringement and receive a reasonable royalty or damages to reimburse THX for lost revenue.
THX also owns a tune-up app on Apple's App Store for iOS devices that allows users to adjust televisions and surround sound systems.
Both firms have until 14 May 2013 to reach early settlement over the patent dispute.
