CBR Staff Writer Published 24 August 2010

Claims to create new and compelling Internet user experience for mobile device users

Intel and Nokia will build their first joint research laboratory, Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Centre, which will be located in the Centre for Internet Excellence (CIE) at the University of Oulu in Finland.

The companies said that the research laboratory will initially begin with two dozen researchers sourced from the local research community to work for three years on creating new and compelling Internet user experiences that leverage the increasing processing and graphics power of mobile devices.

The CIE will provide hosting and operational management for the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Centre with both the companies providing research and technology expertise and support.

Nokia senior vice president and chief technical officer Rich Green said that 3D technology could change the way users use their mobile devices and make their experiences with the technology much more immersive.

"Our new joint laboratory with Intel draws on the Oulu research community's 3D interface expertise and over time, will lay down some important foundations for future mobile experiences," Green said.

University of Oulu rector Lauri Lajunen said that the Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center is an important milestone in strengthening our position as a world-class research university, and the collaboration will spur start-up growth and continue the collaborative tradition in the Oulu region.

"The Oulu area living lab environment provides a unique environment for sensing, testing and piloting technological and social innovations," Lajunen said.
